The Schroder Foundation

City-based charity The Schroder Foundation donated £150,000  towards the new Positive Lives Centre for HIV at the Homerton in January 2010.

As a mark of thanks the Foundation's trustees (pictured above) were presented with a picture taken outside the German Hospital in 1926 by the Homerton's CEO, Nancy Hallett.

The Schroder family has a long history of philanthropy and support for migrant communities in the East End. Baron Sir John Henry Schroder was Treasurer of the German Hospital in Dalston Road, Hackney, which was opened in 1845. At the time, many German immigrants lived and worked in very poor conditions in East London. The young Florence Nightingale visited the hospital on more than one occasion and was inspired to train to become a nurse herself. In 1987 the German Hospital closed and its services were transferred to Homerton Hospital.

Chairman of The Schroder Foundation, Mr Bruno L Schroder said: “I am delighted that my family’s charitable foundation is able to continue our tradition of supporting health services in East London. We hope that our support will encourage other to make a contribution towards this very worthy appeal for improved facilities at the Homerton”.

Hospital Chief Executive Nancy Hallett said: “The Schroder Foundation’s generous donation of £150,000 is a significant boost to our fundraising campaign. We are truly thankful to the trustees.”
